The Creative Behind the Book

    Karen Katz

Something about me I have always been interested in folk art from around the world: Indian miniatures, Mexican ceramics, fabrics, Chagall, Matisse, children'south fine art, and promitive painting, and I dear to paint and experiment with design, texture, collage and color. The careers I've had – every bit a costume designer, a quilt maker, a material creative person, and a graphic designer – accept taken all these interests into business relationship. Looking dorsum, I tin can see that these passions and career choices have played a large function in influencing me to become a children's book writer and illustrator. But most importantly, it was after my husband I adopted our girl from Guatemala that I was inspired to practise a children'south book for her. My beginning book, Over the Moon, was the story of that magical experience of welcoming our daughter Lena into our lives. I painted, I drew, I collaged, and I wrote , and subsequently working very hard . . . a beautiful book was born! 20-two books afterward, my daughter – fourteen years erstwhile – still is an inspiration for me. I am fascinated past babies and little kids. The simplest words and gestures can brand them laugh. Sometimes standing in line at the supermarket and watchin kids in grocery carts, my best ideas are born. I am fasinated by people from all over the globe and what they look similar and how they live and the differences that make u.s.a. all unique. When an idea pops into my head I inquire these questions: — will a child desire to read this book? — Will a parent desire to read this book with their child? — Will this book make a parent and child feel something? — Is there something visual here that will agree a kid's involvement? — Will a kid see something in a different way subsequently reading this book? — If the answer is yes, then I know I'm on the correct rail. I am very lucky to get to exercise what I practice. Everyday I get into my studio and take fun. Don't get me incorrect, some days are very frustrating. Sometimes the colors are all wrong and the words don't sound correct. Simply after I work at information technology for a while . . . and endeavor to do information technology in a different way. . . and recollect. . . and change the words or colors . . . and attempt some more. . . all of a sudden, at that place it is – a keen page of writign, or a slap-up illustration.. And nothing is more satisfying than that!
